Ho, Ho, Ho... Argh! Happy 'Fragging' Christmas.

Hello, dear players.

If, like us, you're looking forward to a visit from a figure in red(1) then we have good news: it's that time of year, again, where an anthropomorphic expression of great jollity and insane generosity can be seen flying high above the streets and houses, delivering presents to all good game players everywhere.

I am, of course, talking about the CHRISTMAS GRIFFIN.

Hush, listen... Is that a flutter of snowy wings? The scratch of claw on tile? The merry jingle of free gift keys?
It is, indeed! Casting around the office for a suitable gift this year, we came up with chairs, an anglepoise lamp, and carpet tiles - all good, until we tried to wrap the darned lamp...

So we've decided to gift digital.

In an effort to thank some of those who've bought the ship over the years (as well as a transparent attempt at some shameless marketing) we're giving two free game keys to any person who has bought a copy of The Ship on Steam, EVER, EVER.(2)

So at some point today, if you've been a Ship customer, have a look in Steam under Games/Manage Gifts and Guest Passes. In there, you'll find TWO FREE COPIES of the game you can send to friends and, if they activate their free copy, they get ANOTHER free copy.

Now my brain hurts with all this 'recursive freeness', but in short, we're giving you a gift to give away, while trying to spread The Ship like a 1920s flu virus or an Art Deco snowball.

So there you go.

And should you wish to thank the Christmas Griffin, just leave a small sherry and a pound of rump steak by the tree.

Happy Christmas, one and all!

The Blazing Griffin Team.

(1) No, not Julia Roberts

(2) Up to and including the end of the Steam Winter Sale 2011

Is this also including just the Multiplayer portion of the game? As I was gyped when I first bought the game and somehow bought the Multiplayer version instead of the Multiplayer/Singleplayer pack which costs the exact same as only the multiplayer.

While this is a nice perk for those who own the game to spread it by a little word of mouth, what this game really needs is some time in the spotlight and a hefty price reduction.

I loved The Ship when it was a free mod for the original HL, and was psyched about it coming to the source engine. However it ended up slipping out without a sound, and to the price of $20 or so. Far more than most people are willing to cough up for a game so far off the beaten path. Since then, I have seen maybe ONE sale for the game, zero free weekends, and dead servers all around.

I just can't believe that this game has been priced where it's been for so long without the slightest indication of a thought of testing other price points. This game could have been quite a nice little gem - instead it's pretty much a dead "could have been". Seriously guys, I don't mean to tell you how to run your business, but just a little more publicity and a more reasonable price would go a LONG way.

To all of those suggesting a heavy discount to jump-start the game: If you read the post carefully, you'll see that the 4 bonus keys are included if you buy the game during the holiday sale (before Jan. 1, 2012).

So that's 5 copies for $10 or $2 apiece. That's pretty damn cheap if you ask me!

Unfortunately, the bonus keys aren't heavily publicized in the Steam store, so I fear that this deal won't get the attention it deserves. Outerlight was dormant for so long that a lot of people have forgotten about the game but I just know it has a ton of potential. In the meantime, I'll be spreading the word to all of my friends, and maybe pick up a few copies for $10 over the holidays. Cheers!

While the 10 € price tag is what put me off for years (!) I got it a while back and am lookign forward to receibing copies to spread and revive it, sadly Bloody Good Time was too fast paced to keep populated while the Ship was too undermarketed and slow to do.

@Stepper hehe I'm South African; so my heritage is part dutch, part english :)

@Brian thanks for spelling out what we actually meant...think we may need to concede that it was a little cryptic...

On that note though, anyone who has ever bought the Ship will get the extra keys. These extra keys won't disappear once the sale ends though.

Spreading the word is always appreciated!

Which means a quadruple growth in possible players :O

Hi Blazing Griffin team,

Congratulations on the aquisition.

I loved this game idea, played the mod and was an early adopter when it released on the steam store.

I must admit that like Patrick, in the comments above, I felt a little gyped over not getting the single player content that came out separately later.

So same question - will we multiplayer buyers get some of this promotion-love too?

I'd love to play some of this with some of my friends.

Thanks for reading. Merry Christmas and Seasons greetings.

Hi, I didn't receive the 2 giftable copies too. So I think you still wait for a response from Valve.

It's a nice idea to bring this, very good, old, game back to life. Hope it'll work.

Greetings! I'm glad to see that The Ship might get a new lease on life. Unfortunately, I'm also one who hasn't gotten my gift keys yet.

Like Patrick, Tom, and Paul, I too felt more than a little left out when singleplayer was released. Indeed, those of us who bought The Ship when it was only multiplayer had to choose between ignoring singleplayer, or paying for the game a second time to get it. Even now, that situation still stands. Where do we, and other early adopters, stand on this? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just an update on the extra keys:

We're experiencing some technical difficulties, as I'm sure you're all aware....but Valve are looking into why the keys are not going through and everybody will get their keys as soon as soon as possible.

Apologies again for the delays!

Dear Blazing Griffin, I bought the ship at the first day of its release and I received two copies as gifts, thanks a lot. I gave a copy to a friend and I still have one.

But when I bought the ship, the single player was not available and it was never added in my gamelist. If I open the gift, the SP will be added to my account ? Do I get the multiplayer version in my inventory or the MP will be destroyed ? which is really sad if.

But thanks a lot for this gift !

If you open the gift, you can give out the extra copy of multiplayer, steam is really good with that so emm, yeah !

Thanks :)

Hi again Blazing Griffin team,

I got the extra multiplayer gifts. Thank you very much. I look forward to trying this with some friends and drum up some hype about this game. I would very much like to try the single player too if there was plans to include that for early adopters. Either way you've been very generous already. Off to newly invigorated servers I go.

Thanks, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

So, my friend got The Ship - 2 Pack from the gift pile. He sent me it as he didn't need it (already owns The Ship and knew no one besides me that was interested).

But, after using this to give myself one, there's only one remaining.

Am I not supposed to get the 2 extra to giveaway as well?

Steve

Wow this is a great offer but a little too late if you ask me. i bought this game back in 2008/9 when it used to be outerlight. i played it on the free weekend i loved it servers was so packed out, hours of fun.

then i bought it! 2 days after the free weekend since 2008 there have been 3 servers online yes 3 servers!!!! in 3 years this has not changed. and there at any one time has been 8 players at the most,

i felt totally ripped off, and still do since a game i loved i couldn't play at all since 2000's and now your trying to make the game come alive?

isn't it about time this game either become FREE to play with items to buy new mods in game which proved really great with the likes of TF2 or if not free to play why not give steam the rights to have a full 1 month FREE to play to get everyone interested.

because even offering keys and giving them away i have over 200 people on my friends list i asked them if they want a copy and all i get is eh? whats the ship?? is it new?

Seriously have a think about at least a FREE week play advertised on steam get the millions of people interested and curious then once people see and know about this game when friends try to give the gifts away people actually know what the game is and what it's about.

2 free copies of a game that has been dead since 2000? i really feel thats not enough at all to kickstart the servers again.

December 31, 2011 6:42 PM

Stepper

Chill Steve, its been dead on 2009, ive played with like 24 people on one server and there were like 69 servers, it was in 2008, it was so many fun, i think its a GREAT idea to let it come alive. The Free week would be good, like in 2006, when it was a free month! I think a free month would be good again! It will randomly appear with a week left in their steam list, they would play it, then after the week, they would buy it, cause they want to play it, its a great idea thats it.

2 free copies was GENIOUS, look how many servers there are now! And so many players that the maps are too damn small EVEN ON THE BIGGEST SHIP THERE IS HERE!

The only thing i would love is new player models and new cloths, cause the ones that are here are too less, i see 10 at a time with the same cloths and player models, and the models are ugly, i dont think they looked like that in the 1860... Look at the teeth, and the cloths are too less for men and women, thats my only point, to make new maps and to make new playermodels and clothes.

@Rusty No Rusty, you get one copy to give out to another friend to play with, and you friend that gifted you the copy, still has one copy, they cant give it out infinite, else they wont gain any money for the modeling tools and such.

Hi Blazing Griffin team,

I just saw that you included the single player to my steam library. This is brilliant. It's more than just the getting free stuff. Knowing that you're really listening to fans and are championing it, well, I hope your fanning the flames will lead to much bigger things for the ship. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some ship single-player content I am eager to try.

Thanks once more and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Tom
